Product Description

From KnoppMyth boot to MythTV in just 13 minutes! Linux Magazine liked Dragon so much that they put it on their 2006 Holiday Shopping Guide.

To take away the guesswork involved in choosing the right hardware, mythic.tv and the KnoppMyth project created Dragon, the first of many KRP-certified MythTV systems to come. It's the next step in making MythTV more accessible to everyone.

Never heard of MythTV or KnoppMyth? Read on to learn what MythTV and Dragon can do for you.

What is Dragon and why should I have one?

Cecil Watson, creator of KnoppMyth, says, "Setting up the Dragon was quick and easy!... The Dragon truly performs and looks great doing so!"

Dragon is high-end HDTV PVR hardware that's at home in anyone's home theater rack. Optimized for MythTV
for use as a combination front-end and back-end HDTV system, it has more than enough computing power for everything MythTV has to offer today and in the foreseeable future. On top of all that, it retains its identity as a general-purpose computer!

You should have a Dragon if:
  • You want a great HDTV hardware platform for MythTV. Dragon is a stylish, high-powered, quiet system that was optimized for broadcast HDTV.

  • You want to own a PVR that consists of open hardware and open software and does not lock down what you can do with it.

  • You want an installation process to do everything possible to tweak the system for you, making it trivial to install and optimize KnoppMyth. Whether you're a MythTV or KnoppMyth guru or novice, our installation process for Dragon will likely be the easiest installation you've had to date. Simply install KnoppMyth R5.5 and let the installer perform automatic tweaks for you, then you'll be ready to use MythTV instead of spending hours tweaking it yourself to find the best settings.

  • You want free software upgrades. Dragon launched with KnoppMyth R5A22, and since then each release (R5A26, R5A30.x, R5B7, R5C7, R5D1, R5E50, R5F1, R5F27, and R5.5) has supported quick and easy Dragon upgrades. Not all vendors provide software updates.

You should buy a Dragon if:
  • You don't want to spend days to research, buy, test, and tweak your own MythTV- and Linux-compatible HDTV system. We have done all of that for you!

  • You want to know what you're getting. Others selling MythTV systems have decided that you don't need to know what's in their systems. Dragon's full hardware specs are open.

  • You want expert support for Dragon. We support all purchased Dragons for thirty (30) days, and contract extensions are available for up to one (1) year.

  • You live in North America. Dragon is built for North American broadcast standards, and the tuners will not work outside North America. But if you live in Australia, you're in luck! You should buy an Australian Dragon made by our colleagues at Better Access.

You should build your own Dragon if:

What does Dragon do, and what doesn't Dragon do?

Dragon was built to work with MythTV, so let's start by telling you what MythTV and all its modules do. We will support your use of Dragon as a MythTV system to do everything MythTV does, except as noted:

  • We do not currently support MythGame, MythNews, MythBrowser, or MythPhone capabilities, though the software will be installed by KnoppMyth. The user is free to investigate and use these capabilities on their own.

  • While the hardware and underlying software supports ripping and playback of DVDs, there is currently no legal means to decrypt CSS-encrypted DVD content in Linux in the USA, and we do not support those capabilities. However, Dragon is still a general-purpose computer, and we cannot prevent people using it as such.

  • Dragon will auto-configure to record off-the-air (ATSC) HDTV content. QAM configuration is left to the user.
